ALLYING IS NOT SYMBOLIC

2018  – DIGITAL ILLUSTRATION – ILLUSTRATOR

This piece was my first foray into hand-lettering, let alone digitally, and I took on the topic of performative allying. Things such as the "pussy hat" to show support for women and the "safety pin" to show you are an ally for marginalized communities do nothing but make the wearer feel better about themselves. Unless the wearer has done something to back up that clothing choice, no matter how small—like correcting your racist grandfather or offering support and comfort to your trans friend—then the symbol is hollow. Putting on a pussy hat doesn't make you a feminist and wearing a safety pin doesn't make you exempt from constant micro-aggressions. Allies need to start by doing better. Actions speak louder than clothes.
